The Name of Jesus

For me, songwriting can range from a bolt-of-lighting happening, to a slow, deliberate task. I love it when lightning strikes; when the words and music tumble out almost as fast as I can get them down, and the song appears in its entirety in about a half-hour. At the other extreme are the songs that take a couple of years. In these cases, the music almost always comes first, complete with song structure and a feeling of what the music is saying, but frustratingly, it can be months before the right lyrics manifest themselves.

“The Name of Jesus” is one of those songs in the middle of my two extremes. While listening to the readings at church one Sunday, at my usual spot behind the piano, a line jumped out at me: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11) My brain instantly sang a fragment of a new chorus, “At the name of Jesus, all  knees shall bend…”, complete with chord structure. Inspiration–joy! Bad timing–panic!! My preferred method of grabbing song ideas is to record them into my cellphone–not an option in the middle of church, when I was supposed to be ready at my post at the piano. The second-best option is to write them down, but I had to fumble in my purse for a long time before I came up with a pen and a blue envelope. I was as discreet as I could be, scratching my ideas down clearly enough to remember them later, before I was due to play another song. Once at home, I began to work on it, and a week and a half later, it was done. I have shared this song with students at two of my schools–I love hearing several hundred kids singing this song! It makes me feel privileged to be part of praising God in this way.

This song is currently available for download on cdbaby, and will be available on  iTunes by the end of March, 2013.

The Name of Jesus (c) 2013 Tina Pumfrey

Oh Lord of all, we come to you. We seek forgiveness, you make us new.

Oh Lord of all, we sing your praise. You count us worthy of your grace.

At the name of Jesus, all knees shall bend. You are Lord, forever without end.

Oh Jesus, every head shall bow, oh Lord, we worship you now.

Oh Lord of all, we come to you. We seek your healing, you make us new.

Oh Lord of all, we sing your praise. Teach us to live within your ways.

At the name of Jesus, all knees shall bend. You are Lord, forever without end.

Oh Jesus, every head shall bow, oh Lord, we worship you now.

Oh Lord of all, we come to you. We seek your blessing, you make us new.

Oh Lord of all, we sing your praise. We glorify you all our days.

At the name of Jesus, all knees shall bend. You are Lord, forever without end.

Oh Jesus, every head shall bow, oh Lord, we worship you now.

Oh Lord, we worship you now.
