A Song for Sunday–Ready or Not

Ready or Not–Britt Nicole

I’m pretty sure at least some of my students enjoyed a little research project I asked them to do during the past school year. I chose two classes and gave them the job of finding out more about contemporary Christian music. Understandably, there was some resistance at first, because most of them only vaguely knew that such a thing even existed. How could this music compete with what they were used to listening to? Well, maybe it wouldn’t be able to compete, but being more aware of what’s out there couldn’t hurt them. To help them out, I gave them a list of artist and band names, and let them spend time just listening and exploring, and then, during the next class, each group chose one artist or band to feature in a presentation. They worked diligently to complete some great work. As they presented their projects, which included short bios and music videos, I was happily surprised to come across songs that I hadn’t heard, myself, and to learn more about artists that I was less familiar with.

As with every project, I couldn’t please everybody, but I know that some of them discovered artists that they genuinely enjoy. I think that, overall, many of the students were surprised at the breadth of styles out there, from punk to rap to pop, and I hope that in the end, some of them might actually continue listening to what they’ve discovered. I’m lucky enough to work in a setting where sharing our faith is not just tolerated, it’s encouraged. It’s one of my favourite parts of my job.

I tried to cover my shine
I’ve tried staying in the lines
I, I, I don’t wanna hide
No, not tonight

You, you, you want me to take my light, light
Fit it in your box, right?
I want you to look me in the eye, eye, eye, eye

Ready or not
Here, here, here, here I come
I’m about to show you where the light comes from
Oh, oh, oh ready or not
Here, here I come
This is who I am
I won’t hide it
I’mma take it all over the world
To the young, to the old, every boy and girl
Ready or not
Here, here I come
I’mma show the world where the love is
